Short Story: What’s Your Value?

This customer walks in the store and spends a whopping 5 figure amount with me.

Right after the sale was made, the customer walks out with his product. Just as I was going to crack open a bottle of wine with my staff, the same customer walks back in.

I was near the cashier, so my colleague, Roxanne, walks up to him to ask him if he forgot something. This guy shouts across the store to make sure that I could hear him.

And said, “take my Amex black and swipe the card for US300,000 dollars!”

I look up at him burly and asked him “Why I would do that?”
“Is there something else you’d like to purchase?

He says “YES! I forgot something!”

I replied, “What, did you forget, Sir?”

He replied louder, “YOU! Because I’m going to buy you off!

I flinched, widened my eyes, and stayed silent!
The whole store got really silent too. No one dared to even mumble a word.

Roxanne smiles and tells him,
“Sir, she’s not for sale, and we don’t encourage these things here.”
“I’m so sorry, but please leave!”

She nudges the man on his shoulder and gives him the gesture of ‘come, walk with me,’ while she walks out of the shop, along with him.
The customer leaves very silently, feeling embarrassed.

We had to be really calm because we didn’t want him to cancel off the purchase.

Roxanne walks up to me right after, puts her hand around my shoulder and gives me the biggest hug.

I looked up at her, and I started laughing, even though I was fuming.
“Roxanne, I’m worth US$300,000?”
I raised my eyebrow, widened my eyes, and then continued a little louder. “ONLY?”

This time, the whole store laughed!

I sang to myself –
‘Darling, He gives love a bad name!”

Ladies, I’m curious if this happened to you, how would you react to this situation?
All the men reading, I would love to know your input on this as well. How do you think a lady should react to this situation?

To me, I think we all need a Roxanne in our life!

      1. It’s actually sad and hard to believe that there’s still people nowadays who think money can buy anything. You can laugh about it of course yes but like I said it’s sad really..

      2. So very true! I used to think that those things happen only in The movies. But, it’s very true! Just imagine, what the girl would go through, her self image and everything. It does take a toll.
You are very right! It is VERY sad,…

      2. As funny as it is, I nearly burnt down a kitchen once about 20 years ago.
In my defence, I was really young! And nearly got expelled for it. Happened in home economics class, in school. #truestory
I won’t be surprised if my teachers still ‘miss’ and remember me.
What a time of my life! 😂🤣
But, I’m a better cook today! I’ve learnt from experience! 😂
The gas cylinders are really scary! I’m so glad that you are ok and nothing happened! Thank God!
